Ardbeg Kildalton Project 2014, 46% - L13 217 - A tasty charity whisky

"Ardbeg Kildalton Project"
is a recently released bottling from this famed distillery of Islay, Scotland. The project refers to Ardbeg distillery's joint effort with the North Highland Initiative (NHI) – a charity inspired by the “sustainable” vision of Prince of Wales. This collaboration between the Ardbeg Distillery (owned by LVMH) and the NHI means that proceedings from this bottling go towards building a new community hub in Port Ellen.

This bottling is exclusively available from the Ardbeg distillery shop only, and retails at £120, gets its name from the Islay landmark, the Kildalton Cross - an ancient 8th century Gaelic stone cross. What is noteworthy is that this whisky has nothing at all in common with an earlier release also called Kildalton, which consisted of non peated Ardbeg whisky.

This one is fully peated Ardbeg, meaning that the peating level is Ardbeg standard of 54PPM (drops after distillation to approximately 20PPM - phenolic parts per million) - so the whisky is a heavily peated Islay style dram. Dr. Lumsden has created the project whisky by marrying ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casked Ardbeg together. No age is given, so one can assume that much of the body consists of fairly young whisky. The Kildalton Project is bottled at 46%, and is non chill-filtered.

But what's it like? Well...

Nose: Quite smoky as expected, very fresh and maritime, some seaweed and iodine as well. By the nose it actually seems older than the current "Ten", which to me at least has a bouquet of a very young distillate, being laden with raw apple and pear notes. Not a bad thing at all for the Project, nice! Some spicy wood, spices and something slightly "chemical"...from the refill sherry casks perhaps? Improves with interaction of air. This spicy wood note reminds me of a refill sherry casked Ardbeg that was bottled exclusively for a Finnish collector long time ago.

Palate: There's a slight alcohol bite at first, but not overly so. The strong peatsmoke is very much present, nicely married with the fruity notes underneath it. Adding a touch of water opens up new elements in taste, and emphasize the sweetness of the spirit. The maritime elements also start to speak louder, and there is a grassy, mentholic sea breeze freshness also. Good, familiar Ardbeg, not unlike those older bottlings many of us miss. Well done!

Finish: Drying clearly, putting an end to that fruity, sweet tone. Long finish that coats ones mouth with maritime iodine and heavy peat smoke.

Comments: A delightful Ardbeg, with a flavour profile that I feel is closer to the older bottlings of Ardbeg. Not as dry as more recent Ten-bottlings or the Renaissance for example. The Kildalton project certainly holds its own in comparison to current range, and contains a richer palate I feel. A complex whisky? Not really. A solid, youthful and good example of Islays' smoky style, and Ardbeg distillerys' particular taste. I hope people do not confuse this with the earlier Kildalton, which was a totally different whisky as said...Hmm, running out of peculiar names at Ardbeg? For a no age statement whisky, the price is quite dear - but as we are talking Ardbegs', it certainly could be much higher as well. A good, solid whisky.

Ardbeg Kildalton Project 2014, 46% - L13 217 - Maukas hyväntekeväisyysviski

Ardbeg Kildalton Project
on Islayn saarella sijaitsevan Ardbegin tislaamon uuden viskin nimi. "Projekti" viittaa North Highland Initiative–organisaatioon, jonka takana on itse Walesin prinssi Charles.

Kildalton project onkin standardia, turvesavuista Ardbeg-viskiä, jota tehdään Port Ellenin mallastamossa valmistetusta, turvesavulla kuivatusta mallasohrasta. Ardbegille tehdyn mallastetun ohran PPM-luku (phenolic part per million - viittaa mukana olevan savuisuuden määrään molekyylimääränä, eli yksi savumolekyyli per miljoona) on 54, eli aika savuisesta tavarasta on kyse.

Mausteista puuta, hieman jotain kemikaalista?

Maku: Alkoholi hieman puraisee, muttei kovin häiritsevästi.

Maultaan tuote on ainakin hyvä.
